About The Root of it All

The Root of it All: An inspiring film about our relationship with food

The Root of it All is an emotional journey that explores our connection to food through the eyes of southern Albertans. Created by Calgary-based filmmakers Kalyn Edworthy and Kimberly Gray, the award-winning short documentary is currently continuing its run at multiple prominent film festivals across the continent. The audience might recognize some familiar faces and masters of food craft around Calgary, including folks from The Light Cellar, Land of Dreams and YYC Growers, Rebel Acres, and Highfield Regenerative Farm. Ultimately, The Root of it All is a film about hope; getting to know those who grow our food may be one of the most empowering places to begin to uncover pragmatic solutions to our ecological challenges.

The film has received multiple awards and accolades including the 2023 Alberta Film & Television Award for Best Documentary Production Under 30 Minutes, Best Host (nominee), Best Screenwriter (nominee), The Central Alberta Film Festival Award for Best Short Documentary, and the Impact Doc Award of Merit for Documentary Short. The Root of it All was nominated for seven Hollywood North Film Awards in Toronto and a Golden Sheaf Award in Yorkton, SK.

To date, the film is an Official Selection of Northwest Fest 2023, Central Alberta Film Festival 2023, Toronto International Women Film Festival 2024, Yorkton Film Festival 2024, International Migration and Environmental Film Festival 2024, Devour! The Food Film Fest 2024, Ceres Food Film Festival 2024, Saskatchewan International Film Festival 2024, Best Short Fest 2024 (semi-finalist) and Calgary’s Homegrown Short Film Showcase 2024.
