Tallow and Tallow Soap: More Urban Homesteading!
With Jodi Gunn of Sasquatch Flats Apothecary
Saturday, March 22nd, 2025
1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
In-person, Hands-on
Let’s talk tallow and let’s make tallow soap! Let’s review how to render fat to make tallow and why our skin loves it. Then let’s talk about creating a soap recipe. What fats can we use? Why choose tallow for soap? How do we design a soap recipe using fats from our kitchen? How do we turn fat into soap?
You will leave this workshop knowing how to make your own beef tallow
and how to create a recipe with fats from your own kitchen with attributes important to you.
Each participant will prepare their own customized tallow soap to take home.
You will cut your loaf of soap at home the next day into 6 bars or 12 mini bars.
These will need to cure for a few weeks, so we’ll send you home with a bar you can use right away!
A handout will be provided with step-by-step instructions, a supply list, and recipes.
Please note we will be using lye (sodium hydroxide) in this class.
Register now and secure your spot to start learning - just bring your curiosity!
About the Instructor:
Jodi Gunn, B.Comm, LLB, PFP, Cert. Yoga and Meditation Instr., and Urban Homesteader for this class!
Jodi believes in curiosity.
After completing business school and law school she swung the pendulum and explored yoga, meditation, and eastern philosophy. A curve in events lead her to banking and financial planning. The question became: what is wealth and how do we define abundance?
For Jodi, abundance includes experimentation with creativity, resilience, fun… and connection with the community! And what feels more abundant than: local, delicious, and nutrient-dense food, beautiful and nourishing skin care, wild gifts from prairies and forests, splendour of gardens, and connection with growers, creators, and fellow explorers? That’s urban homesteading. Jodi would love to co-create abundance with you! Let’s make tallow, balm, soap, cheese, sauerkraut, baskets… and friends!
Jodi lives with her husband and two Jack Russells in Calgary, Alberta and most surfaces in her home are covered in experiments with urban homestead projects.
