Frangula purshiana
Cascara sagrada translates to "sacred shrub" and has a long history of use in North America where it is a native species. The bark is harvested and allowed to age at least a year to break down the constituent anthrone. This bitter bark is occasionally used for its laxative properties and can be made into an extract or drunk as tea.
Add 1 tbsp of bark and 1-2 litres of water to a pot. Bring to a slow, rolling boil. Cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes. Strain.
