Mucuna Extract Powder - Organic - Non-irradatied
Mucuna pruriens
Mucuna is a vining plant indigenous to parts of Africa and Asia, where it is also known as velvet bean or Kapikacchu. Naturally extracted using water and ethanol to preserve the plants natural qualities and vacuum wind-dried without the use of high heat. This extract is water soluble and has a clean bitter-free taste with earthy, malt and caramel notes and contains 10% L-dopamine.
Mucuna has been used as a herb within many herbal traditions, most notably Ayurveda, where it is known as Kapikacchu as well as Atmagupta, which translates to ‘secret self’. According to Ayurveda, Kapikacchu offers many benefits—of note: it has traditionally been used as a treatment for Parkinson's Disease. Today, Mucuna is regaining its popularity and has found its way into the Elixir crafting culture.
Mucuna is best obtained as a prepared extract that has been either hot or cold water extracted.
Used as a coffee substitute, Mucuna’s flavour has been described as ‘Nescafe-like’. In its extract form, simply mixed with hot water, it does have earthy, malty, coffee-like flavour tones. It combines well with chocolate, and medicinal mushrooms, and is great to elevate any Elixir.
As for properties and benefits: Mucuna contains high amounts of L-dopa (levodopa), a precursor to Dopamine, as well as a small amount of Serotonin—all of which are involved in providing us with a happy disposition and a general sense of well-being. Many people take Mucuna to help boost Dopamine levels and experience a lift of mood through their day.
Of course, with any herb, caution is required when pregnant or breastfeeding. Exercise caution with this one as it has been said that Mucuna shouldn’t be used during pregnancy or while breastfeeding because it may affect the secretion of prolactin.
It has a slightly bittersweet, caramel/coffee-like flavour making it well-suited for sweets or adding to beverages.
